Why Hymns Matter for Children – Introducing Our New Hymns Collection (Volume 1)

A gentle, meaningful way to help elementary-aged children learn timeless hymns of the faith through Scripture connections, beautiful art, and time spent enjoying God’s creation.

Why Teach Hymns to Children?

Every Sunday, as I hear an old hymn sung in church, worship is stirred in my heart. Almost without fail, a line or two will stand out—reminding me of Scripture, a season of life, or a moment when I clearly saw God’s faithfulness. As this happened again and again, I couldn’t shake the thought: what a gift it would be for our children to understand the words they hear so often.

Hymns surround our children—at church, in our homes, and even playing softly in the background. Yet many children sing these songs without fully grasping the rich truth behind them. I began to desire a way to intentionally teach hymns to my own children—not just as music, but as a meaningful study that connects to Scripture, history, geography, art, and the beauty of the world God created.

As a Charlotte Mason–inspired homeschool mom, I wanted lessons that embraced beauty and wonder: practicing copywork and narration, studying great works of art, and spending time outdoors. When I considered the biblical call to train up our children in the Word, I realized hymns—songs filled with theology, sung truths, and generations of faith- could be a beautiful way to do that.

Children (and adults!) remember truth through melody and repetition. Hymns help us sing what is true about God, and as we sing, our hearts are instructed in the gospel. Hymns also connect generations of believers—there is a reason they have been sung for centuries. They unite us with believers who came before us and remind us that our faith is rooted in something far bigger than ourselves.

Most importantly, hymns move worship from the head to the heart. They are not merely memory work—though they do help us remember—but a way to shape our loves, teach our hearts what to believe, and remind us who we are and whose we are.

Why Hymns Can Feel Hard to Teach

For some parents and teachers, hymns can feel intimidating. You might think, It’s just a song—what is there to teach? Or perhaps the opposite: Where do I even begin?

Many hymns contain older or complex language. It can feel overwhelming to explain these concepts to children, especially when time and energy are already limited. Preparing lessons that feel meaningful—not overwhelming—can be a real challenge.

That is exactly why this curriculum was created.

Introducing the Hymns Collection – Volume 1

The Hymns Collection: Volume 1 was thoughtfully designed for children ages 5–11. While pieces can certainly be adapted for younger children, this collection was created primarily with elementary-aged students in mind. It works beautifully for family-style learning, allowing you to easily adjust discussions and activities for different ages.

This curriculum includes a Teacher Guidebook and a Student Notebook, both designed to be printed and assembled at home. Each day, your child will work through guided lessons and activities, and by the end of the study they will have a meaningful collection of pages to help them remember the hymns, Scripture, history, art, and experiences they explored.

Although created with homeschool families in mind, this collection also works well for family devotional time, family worship, and certain classroom or co-op settings.

Weekly Lesson Structure

Each hymn is studied over the course of one week, for about 20-40 minutes:

Day 1 – Hymn Context & History
Children learn about the writer of the hymn, their backstory, the time period, and the place in the world where the hymn was written. Students practice narration, summarization, and retelling as they engage with the historical context.

Day 2 – Scripture Study
A Scripture passage connected to the hymn is studied together, with discussion questions and a hands-on craft to reinforce understanding.

Day 3 – Art Study
Children observe and discuss a famous piece of artwork that connects to both the Scripture and the hymn. They are then invited to create their own artistic rendition.

Day 4 – Nature Study
Each week includes a nature-based activity or outdoor craft, encouraging families to step outside and enjoy God’s creation together.

Optional review games are included throughout the week to reinforce learning in a joyful, engaging way.

A Final Word

Hymns plant seeds of faith that often grow quietly and faithfully over time. Long after lessons are finished, children carry these songs in their hearts—singing truth, recalling Scripture, and remembering God’s faithfulness. It is our prayer that this Hymns Collection helps you sow those seeds with intention, beauty, and joy.
