Scripture Memory for Toddlers and Preschoolers

“I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” Psalm 119:11

It’s never too early to begin Scripture memory for toddlers and preschoolers. Even before your child can read, they can listen, sing, and move! As soon as they can talk, sing, or wiggle — you can start teaching them short Bible verses. Here’s some ideas for you that my family has found helpful in this journey.

Make It Musical and Fun

Young children learn best through rhythm and repetition. Try putting the verse to a simple tune or finding a Scripture song. We love Slugs and Bugs: Sing the Bible — their music is straight Scripture and perfect for little ears! You can also create fun hand motions to go with each phrase.

Use Natural Moments in Your Day

You don’t have to carve out special time for Bible memory. Use the moments you already have! In our home, we recite our verse each time we sit at the kitchen table — breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner…. That’s five or more natural opportunities every day to plant God’s Word in little hearts. It’s kept as part of our centerpiece, so that it’s always easily accessible!

Keep It Simple — One Verse a Week

Start small and be consistent. Choose one Bible verse each week. Once your child knows it, add another. Keep the old ones fresh by reviewing them together. We write each mastered verse on an index card and tape them to the side of our kitchen cabinet by the sink. It’s a sweet reminder to pause and review every time I do the dishes, which is… a lot.

A Great Place to Start: The Romans Road

If you’re unsure where to begin, the Romans Road is a wonderful foundation. These verses share the Gospel in simple, powerful truth — perfect for little learners:

  • We all sin and need a Savior.

  • God offers the free gift of eternal life.

  • He loves us and chose to rescue us.

  • When we believe and confess, we are saved.

Romans 3:23, Romans 6:23, Romans 5:8, Romans 10:9, and Romans 10:13 are all part of the great explanation of salvation from Paul in the book of Romans. Click here for a free download of these verses on cards, so that all you have to do is print!

The Heart Behind It

Your toddler or preschooler might not understand every word they’re learning, and that’s okay. God’s Word will not return void (Isaiah 55:11). Every verse you sing, every motion you make, every joyful repetition — these are seeds of faith planted deep in their hearts.

Start small, stay consistent, and trust that God will bring fruit in His time.
