Common Roadblocks in Family Discipleship

Discipling your children at home can feel both exciting and overwhelming. You want to teach them about God’s love and truth, but sometimes you wonder where to start—or if you’re even doing it right.

At Sweeter than Honey, we understand those questions and doubts because we’ve had them too. Family discipleship doesn’t have to be complicated; it can grow naturally in your everyday rhythms as a family.

Let’s look at a few common roadblocks parents face when discipling their children—and how you can overcome them with confidence and joy.

1. “Is my child ready?”

Here at Sweeter than Honey, we believe that children are ready for discipleship from a very early age. Even in infancy, your child can be sung to, read to, and can begin to hear the good news of the Gospel. Babies and toddlers absorb more than we realize—they are learning from our tone, our joy, and our routines.

Our Big Truths Collection was created specifically for ages 1–3, because we believe that even the youngest hearts can begin to grasp the big truths of our faith. Through songs, stories, and simple activities, you can begin planting seeds of truth that will grow as your child does.

2. “What if my child isn’t interested?”

We get it—some days little ones are hard to engage. That’s why we design Bible-based activities for all types of learners, using movement, singing, dancing, playing, and creating. Every child connects in different ways, and when discipleship feels playful and hands-on, it naturally captures their attention.

Try using your daily routine to your advantage:

  • Read a short Bible story during snack time while their hands are busy and mouths are full.

  • Set out a coloring or craft activity while you make lunch, and talk about what they’ve made while you eat - our mini books are great for this!

  • Play worship music while cleaning up together, or talk about a verse while taking a walk.

Remember—discipleship doesn’t have to look like a formal lesson. It happens in the everyday moments that make up your family life.

3. “Do I have time?”

If you’ve ever thought, “I just don’t have time for family devotionals,” you’re not alone. But Scripture gives us a simple and beautiful model for discipleship. Deuteronomy 6:7 reminds us to “teach them diligently to your children, and talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise.”

That means discipleship happens in the car, at the dinner table, during bedtime stories, and morning cuddles. You don’t need a perfect plan—you just need intentionality. A few minutes here and there can make a lasting impact.

You’re Not Alone

At Sweeter than Honey, we want to come alongside you with tools that make family discipleship simple, joyful, and meaningful. Whether you’re starting with toddlers or teaching preschoolers, our Bible-based lessons are designed to help you confidently disciple your children right where you are.
